Macbeth Notes

Text in Context:
Nature Imagery:

When the murderer tells Macbeth Banquo is dead, Macbeth is happy, but then the murderer tells Macbeth fleance escaped, he is angry. If he would've been killed as well, everything would be perfect. - act 3 scene 4 page 2 line 25
Shakespeare used nature imagery to represent what he wanted in juxtaposition to what actually happened.

Blood & Gore:
When THE MURDERER says to MACBETH ABOUT BANQUO:
Aye my good lord safe in a ditch he bides... with twenty trending gashes on his head - reason why the murderer tells Macbeth this is to convince macbeth that Banquo is dead. - act 3 scene 4 page 2 line 25

Macbeth Essay

"Dagger of the Mind" In the play Macbeth, the main character, is corrupted by the thought of power he would get if he was King. After the witches tell him "All hail Macbeth, the hereafter King" he trusts them because once they have been right about him being thane of Cawdor. The thought of being King just made him want it so badly he ended up committing regicide. This led him to becoming King and wanting even more, trying to kill anyone other then his children who might end up on the throne after he will die.

"Bound to saucy doubts and fears" The author of the play, Shakespeare, uses Nature Imagery because nature is always going wrong because of the theme power and corruption and to express the feelings the characters have, "I had else been perfect, whole as a marble, founded as the rock, as broad and general as the casting air". With this, the author is explaining Macbeth would've been happy with how the things would've turned out if the murderers killed Fleance as well. But because they didn't, he feels as if he is "cabined, cribbed, confined".

Shakespeare is also using Supernatural abilities to make the play more interesting and entertaining, "The time has been that when the brains were out the man would die and there an end". This quote is referring to ghosts, and how if you killed someone they would just die, but that time passed, and now people wake up from the dead as ghosts, haunting those who killed them. This is effective as people like super-abilities and things that wouldn't normally happen in real life.

"Courage to make the love's known" the author uses Blood and Gore in the play Macbeth because everyone who watched his plays at that time enjoyed seeing death and blood. "Their daggers unmannerly breeches with gore", this quote is right after King Duncan is killed, and it says that the dagger they used to kill King Duncan with was full of blood. The play is full of death and that's why people love it so much.

"The service and the loyalty I owe in doing it pays itself" The play has lots of examples of dramatic irony as well, where we know that the character means something totally different then what it said. "More is thy due than more than all I can pay" this is where Duncan thanks Macbeth for his actions, but what he doesn't know is that Macbeth is planning on killing him just so he can become king himself. This is a great example of dramatic irony, since the entire audience knows what Macbeth has in mind.

All the way through the play we have been following 3 MOTIFS, Blood & Gore, Supernatural, Nature Imagery, and all of these are symbols of Power & Corruption.

Macbeth

Heroic couplet - at the end of a soliloquy, means a decision has been made,
                         - two lines in a iambic pentameter that rhyme
                         - Hear it not Duncan of it's a kneel,   That summons thee to heaven, or to hell

"Not so happy, yet much happier!"
A foil is a character that follows the same story line as the protagonist, but makes different choices, and in Macbeth, this character is Banquo. He was told by the witches that he will have a great future like Macbeth, but he didn't do anything about it, he didn't plot a plan against his friends just to reach that future. He also chose not to take the information seriously even though the witches proved themselves trustworthy. And that's where their paths split apart.

Homelessness

Homeless people sleep on the streets and under any roof they can find. They don't have beds due to the lack of money so they have to sleep on the pavement on the streets covered only by newspapers cardboards and if lucky, in a sleeping bag. Winter is the hardest season to survive in for a homeless person due to the cold and snow. Because it's under freezing point, finding shelter is the priority for them, which is usually in a hostel so they have to spend their on money on it.

Many people say that giving money to homeless people will not do any good to them because they are buying drugs out of those money. 80% of the homeless people in the UK were tested for drugs and it turned out positive. 4 out of 10 homeless people say that they are recovering from drug addiction. Also, giving money to homeless people fuels their addiction. Instead of giving them money with which they will most likely by drugs, you should give them something to eat and something to drink. If you don't have something to give them, at least treat them like human beings and say "No, Sorry." while smiling. This shows that you care about them and you are worried but you cannot help at this moment.

Charities are trying to help the homeless people, and 75% of them are only sleeping one night on the streets and then they are taken to a large center where they are given food, drinks and shelter. People who volunteer to help with homelessness have to go on the streets from 8am to 2pm once every 4-6 weeks to look for homeless people and take them to the large temporary centers. In these

Callous - being hard or mean or cold to someone, when you play guitar you get a callous on your fingers

Plight - unfortunate or difficult situation

Patronizing - Making someone feel below you

Unanimous - together

Vociferous - expressing things in a loud or forceful way

Benign - not causing harm or damage

Scour - to search something, clean something really well

Augment - make something better by adding to it

Winter is the worst time to be homeless
Do not give money

The plight of homeless people is even greater in cold seasons!
Lots of the now existant books are trying to explain a situation that is aplied to real life as well, and so does Stone Cold, it shows how a child was left without a place to rest in. The child, Link, was sleeping on the pavement in doorways begging for money from people because he was homeless and besides getting a job which he was unable to do, it was his only choice left. But sleeping on the streets wasn't the bad part, it was the cold weather that he was forced to sleep in with only a sleeping bag. Also the cold weather had made it pretty impossible for him to stay in so he had to rent a place where he could sleep for a few weeks. In real life, the homeless are going to be taken to a refuge where they are fed and offered something to eat and drink. Stone Cold and Reality are not too far apart from each other even though one is a book and the other one is happening right now.

Link was forced to go on the streets.

What Where When

Homelessness has increased due to the lack of space and lack of houses, and to the fact that prices are too high and poor people can't afford much. One of the most frequent reason is when private tenancies come to an end and people don't have an alternative but to go on the streets.

Homelessness increased every year and in the last 3 consecutive years it increased by 185,000 homeless people per year. House building is at it's lowest since 1920's. 1 in 10 people experienced homelessness and 1 in 50 people experienced homelessness in the past 5 years.

The housing minister said that strong measures against homelessness are already being applied, they have given people the freedom to rent homeless people private houses and they have provided £ 1 billion to fight against freedom.

"More people are having to be housed in temporary accommodation"
Stone Cold and real life homelessness have tons of similarities since it was based on a true story. But not everything is the same, it has some differences as well. It wasn't;t very hard for LinK to find a place where he could sleep in, like it said in the article. There were lots of place where he could go for accommodation, like the hostel he was in for one week, or the boat where it was war. Also, no one offered Link any place to sleep in, like they say in the article. He had to sleep roughly on the cold pavement of the streets with only a sleeping bag, without anyone coming up to him to offer him break fast and a bed for a night for free. Due to this, the book was trying to make homelessness a lot worst then it actually is.

Stone Cold, the book written by Robert Swindells has multiple genres, it is realist fiction because it is giving an example of homelessness which happens in real life, everyday to human beings, who sleep and live on the streets, surrounded by sometimes cold weather, sometimes immense heat. Also, the book has a bit of mystery in it, starting from the point where Ginger was gone, and Link has to find him, together with Gail. They had to find Shelters house, because he was the suspect and in the end they solve the problem and find Ginger, unfortunately dead.

Link - "I decided to move on" he was thinking of others and caring about them
        - he didn't know how to live on the streets properly, naive
        - spent money unnecessarily, naive
        - got kicked out of the rented house, couldn't argue/kind of not smart
        - he bought Ginger fags, he cares about others
        - he fell in love with Gail, he needed affection because he was lonely
        - he got ignored by Toya, he feels lonely
        - he went in Shelter's house, trusting
        - he doesn't know how to survive on the streets, unexperienced
        -  didn't want to hurt anyone, benign

Shelter - kills homeless people, callous
             - doesn't care about other people, callous
             - arranged the dead people in order, organized
             - came from the army, trained to kill
             - he killed cold blooded, insane
             - planned every kill, intelligent
             - Shelter, ironic name
             - he dressed up each dead person, crazy for organization
             - he lied about killing people when they interviewed him, manipulative
             - killed dossiers, he hated disorder

Gail - friends with Link, kind
        - buys Link food, caring
        - shares the money with Link, caring
        - feels sorry for Link and takes care of him, benign
        - wasting money on phone calls, unexperienced
        - she lied about being homeless, not trust worthy
        - she always had good intentions, kind
        - didn't want to hurt anyone, benign
        - thinking about others, thoughtful
        - supported link, supportive

Cold and afraid, on the streets.
In Stone Cold, Link has many attributes, and one of the most important ones is that he is a growing character even though his life gets worse and worse by day. Everyday he is learning new things about how to survive in the streets and what to do in different situations from his mentor, Ginger. He is also improving his relationships with Ginger and Gail as they spend more time together and get to know each other better. It seems like Link is full of negative attributes but he in fact has lots of positives ones as well.

Ode to a large tuna in the market

Now Dead!
The author Pablo Nerudo uses lots of interesting ways to explain ode to a large tuna in the market. He mainly uses juxtaposition between life and death. Metaphors and similes such as, "torpedo (...) missile that swam" and "Sappy as a sprung fir"  show how alive the fish was and are juxtaposed with metaphors and imagery of death. One of the most powerful metaphors used is that of the torpedo.

Torpedo of the Ocean!
Because the tuna is really fast and graceful, the motion of it is represented by weaponry used in army, "Torpedo, Missile that swam". Right next to it, a juxtaposition is placed, explaining that the once torpedo is now "Lying in front of me Dead". Because this poem uses lots of juxtaposition, there are more of these examples.

Sea-quake!
"Ode to a large Tuna in the Market" uses lots of metaphor, one of which is describing the motion of the fish, "Tidal Wave" which shows that the fish was constantly moving, like a tidal wave, because tidal waves don't stop and keep going, and then it's positioned next to "Dead Remains" which shows that after the whole fast movement and graceful swimming, it is NOW just dead, insignificant pieces. Also "Tidal Wave" show how full of life it was, just like a sprung fir.

Catafalque King
In the poem there is also a age difference, young and old. The meaning of childhood and happiness is represented by "Sappy as a sprung fir", because a sprung fir of green turmoil stands for happiness and young age, while "Dead, catafalque king" means that an old and dead king of the ocean is NOW lying dead, catafalque between all the other insignificant vegetables. The author also used "Sprung fir" as a reference to how perfect the fish is, just like a well-oiled ship of the wind.

Ship of the Wind!
The creator of this poem also used an other metaphor, "Well-oiled Ship of the Wind" to represent the perfection of the fish, that it swam swiftly in the sea, and lived a perfect life without any problems in it's life, and even after death, the tuna is "Navigating the Waters of Death" perfectly like in it's previous life, no flaws. NOW again swimming happily.

NOW and THEN
"Now" is very efficient when using along a juxtaposition, that's why Pablo Nerudo uses "now" before most of the juxtapositions "NOW simply dead remains (...) Navigating NOW the waters of death" to remind us that how the fish WAS swimming and how full of life the fish WAS, NOW it's just dead in the market. Using "now" gives the poem a feeling that makes us sorry for the fish even more.

The poem is all about mood or atmosphere ( dark shoves ) and each stanza describes something or someone. Dark mood, Positive mood,
My Chosen Stanza

The dour man does for himself. Before him,
Half lost, his small possessions swim
Cast off, random
They nose and nudge the porthole glass like floatsam.

In the last stanza it explains that The man is really poor because "half lost" and "cast off" mean that there is more water then anything else in the washing machine. "Small" also shows that he does not have a lot of "possessions", or clothes. The man is dour because he is poor. The last stanza symbolizes sadness.

Poem

The Woods that Bring the Sunset Near
The wind from out of the west is blowing
The homeward-wandering cows are lowing,
Dark grow the pine woods, dark and drear, --
The woods that bring the sunset near.
When o'er wide seas the sun declines,
Far off its fading glory shines,
Far off, sublime, and full of fear --
The pine woods bring the sunset near.
This house that looks to east, to west,
This dear one, is our home, our rest;
Yonder the stormy sea, and here
The woods that bring the sunset

I am an eagle
As father gave the push, my mother whispered, “Fly, my child!”
Resplendent in my feathers, yet was frightened of the wild
unknown for that where I grew up, I had to leave and find
the reason for my wings and claws, and how I can’t be mild.

The rush of warm wind cushioned me as I took my first flight,
majestic bird who gracefully flew to such soaring heights.
From that day on I fed myself and did my parents proud
for they have taught me not to let the prey escape my sight.

For forty years I roamed the land and soared over the sea,
but then the time had come to make the choice that’s hard for me.
Up on the steepest rocky mount, I went and by my own
removed my brittle beak, talons, and old wings painfully.

Why did I have to go through all the changes and the pain?
Those parts were worn and have become my weakness and my bane.
So now that God has given me another thirty years,
behold me after my rebirth, the eagle soars again!

"The Eagle soars again!" The poem is about An Eagle who is let free, and learns how to fly and take care of itself. It symbolises the real life and the choices made in life. The eagle is pernificated in the aspects that at the beginning it lives with its family, like a child, and then it must learn how to fly and take care of itself, like a child who is growing up and needs to get a job and live on its own money, and then after a long time of doing this, the Eagle must remove its old body parts because they are weakening it, and so for an old person, who is not able to do what he/she could do when he/she was young. It is well written and it's presenting the human life by personalising An eagle.

The poem "I'm an Eagle" uses imagery, metaphor and personification to help personificate the Eagle. Is using a lot of sight imagery to describe the looks of the Eagle, "removed my brittle beak, talons, and old wings painfully". It uses one metaphor which says that the Eagle will live on after he removed his weakened body parts, uses a lot of symbolism to describe its life and it represents the human life which uses personification. It has a lot of adjectives and adverbs to help with the imagery and that's why it's really good.
